On November 20, 1847, the propeller ship, Phoenix, caught fire and burned to the water line off the shore of Sheboygan in Lake Michigan. She carried about 175 Dutch immigrants, many of whom perished that horrible day. The survivors carried on, settling in Cedar Grove, Oostburg, Gibbsville, Sheboygan and Manitowoc. This book is a tribute to those lost and the survivors. It is a remembrance of the tragedy, 150 years later. - Phoenix, The Fateful Journey - Tragedy, Survival and Heroism

Immigrating to America involved a perilous trip across the Atlantic. That inland travel could be extremely dangerous is aptly described in John Textor’s well-researched historical novel Phoenix, The Fateful Journey. Within sight of their Sheyboygan destination, hundreds of people, mostly Dutch, perished on Lake Michigan. In total, less then fifty, about thirty Dutch, survived the ordeal. Particularly the Dutch communities of Winterswijk, Aalten, Enter, Wish/Varsseveld were hard hit with casualties in one of the most horrifying ship disasters in the history of immigration. The book Phoenix is more than just about a horrible disaster. It foremost describes common folks from small Dutch communities looking for freedom and opportunity in the New World. It is a testimonial to those who survived against all odds, and who went on to resume their daily lives. The book closes with a section on some Dutch-born survivors, and lists the other passengers mostly by name and originHardcover with jacket, illustrated historical novel, passenger list with places of origin, and historical context of maritime disasters., 240 pages, Hardcover. - Dutch Chicago - A History of the Hollanders in the Windy City

The story of the Dutch in Chicago until now largely has been below the radar screen of historians. The dean of Dutch American historians in his latest book has lifted the veil on an amazing community which now numbers in excess of 250,000. Whereas most Dutch groups in Chicago assimilated into the American culture around them, the Dutch Reformed settled into a few distinct enclaves - the Old West Side, Englewood, Roseland and South Holland - where they stuck together, and build an infrastructure of churches, schools, societies, and shops that enabled them to live from cradle to grave within their own communities. The closest the Chicago Dutch came to farming was owning horses which the entrepreneurial types used in their businesses, particularly garbage hauling and vegetable gardening and peddling. Business always was picking up for them. In jobs that Americans despised, the Dutch saw opportunities, eventually monopolizing the disposal business not just in Chicago but across the nation. The author also covers those groups that assimilated. "This brilliant chronicle of a unique ethnic enclave is as much a tribute to the overlooked Dutch contingent of the Windy City as a monument of historical scholarship." - Hans Krabbendam, Roosevelt Study Center. 250 photos and illustrations, appendixes detailing garbage and hauling industries, bibliography, index., 857 pages, Hardcover.
